Builders got two stoves completed this past week. One was built at Mandangeni primary school in Moshi and another at Mgagao secondary school.
We aim at following up the requests from schools in the order as they come and as the schools get ready with their money collection and acquiring the agreed materials. But this time we picked these two schools primarily so that the builders – or at least most of them – can sleep at home due to the corona risk.
Again two more schools can save huge amounts of wood and trees are left to grow. Schools report that firewood consumption is now less than half of what the three-stone cooking fire used. Some report that the need for firewood has reduced to a third of what they used before!
And when the amount of firewood is measured in lorry loads or tens of pickup loads per year per school, building stoves for schools is really an environmental act. And in addition the kitchen becomes smoke-free for the cook and the children helping there.
Mgagao stove was built by Apendaeli and Elias.
Mandageni stove was built by Ndanu and Tumaini.
Rakentajat saivat kaksi hellaa valmiiksi mennellä viikolla. Yksi rakennettiin Mandangenin alakoululle Moshiin ja toinen Mgagaon yläkoululle Mwangaan.
Yritämme yleensä vastata koulujen pyyntöihin siinä järjestyksessä kun ne tulevat ja kun koulut valmistautuvat omalta osaltaan hankkeeseen varoinkeruulla ja sovittujen materiaalien hankinnalla. Mutta tällä kertaa valitsimme nämä kaksi koulua vain sillä perustetta, että ne olivat lähellä rakentajien koteja, jotta raketajat – tai ainakin useimmat heistä – voisivat yöpyä kotonaan koronariskin takia.
Kun polttopuun määrät lasketaan kuorma-autollisissa tai kymmenissä pick-up-kuormissa per vuosi per koulu, hellojen rakentaminen on todellinen ympäristöteko. Samalla keittiö on savuton sekä kokille että lapsille, jotka auttavat häntä.
Taas kaksi koulua säästää polttopuiden määrässä valtavasti ja puut jatkaa kasuvaan luonnossa. Koulut raportoivat polttopuun menekin pienenevän alle puoleen siitä, mitä kolmen kiven keittotuli aiemmin käytti. Jotkut raportoivat polttopuun tarpeen vähentyneen jopa kolmannekseen!
