Year 2020 has almost come to an end and it’s time to look what we managed to do during this exceptional year. A lot! Despite the half a year halt due to the uncertainties of corona.
With the help of individual donors and a Stats4SD grant, and together with the local builders of UMAUKI and our partner organisation RECODA, Liana helped 12 schools in Rombo and Mwanga districts in Northern Tanzania. Seven schools obtained a locally built 30,000 litre rainwater harvesting tank that collects water from the school roof, two or three hand washing kits near toilets and education materials for hand hygiene education. Seven schools have so far obtained an improved cooking stove that saves firewood and makes the kitchen smoke free. One more, the eight stove will get ready before Christmas. Recycled water from the hand washing kits is used for growing tree seedlings.
In addition to helping schools we supported a community in Yam Makaa in their efforts of restoring an erosion gully that had engulfed a large area of their farmland and continued to grow. This was an exceptionally demanding task, but it worked… finally, after a lot of effort especially from Ndanu and Erick. The gully is not filled up and covered in vegetation.
Three pictures at the end of the message of the stove that got ready today. Membership fees from the supporting members were used to sponsor this stove. It was built at Kiverenge primary where a water tank was also completed some time ago. Builders were Ndanu and Iddy. Thank you to the builders and the supporting members who made this stove possible.

Vuosi 2020 on melkein päättynyt ja on aika katsoa, mitä onnistuimme tekemään tämän poikkeuksellisen vuoden aikana. Paljon! Puolen vuoden koronan epävarmuudesta johtuvasta tauosta huolimatta.
Yksittyisten lahjoitusten ja Stats4SD apurahan avulla, ja yhdessä UMAUKI:n rakentajaryhmän ja kumppaniorganisaatiomme RECODA:n kanssa, Liana auttoi 12 koulua Rombon ja Mwangan alueilla Pohjois-Tansaniassa. Seitsemän koulua sai paikallisesti rakennetun 30,000 litran sadeveden keräystankin, joka kerää vettä koulun katolta, kaksi tai kolme käsienpesulaitetta (per koulu) kouluvessojen lähelle ja koulutusmateriaalit käsien hygieniakoulutukseen. Tällä hetkellä seitsemän koulua on hankkinut parannetun hellan, joka säästää polttopuuta ja tekee keittiöstä savuttoman. Vielä yksi (kahdeksas) liesi valmistuu ennen joulua. Käsienpesulaitteista kierrätetty vesi käytetään puiden taimien viljelyyn.
Koulujen auttamisen lisäksi tuimme Yam Makaan viljelijöitä heidän pyrkimyksissään korjata eroosiorotko, joka oli niellyt suuren osan heidän viljelysmaastaan ja kasvoi edelleen yhä suuremmaksi. Tämä oli poikkeuksellisen vaativa tehtävä, mutta se toimi … viimeinkin, erityisesti Ndanun ja Erickin tekemän suuren työn ansiosta. Rotko on nyt täyttynyt ja täynnä kasvillisuutta.
Ohessa kolme kuvaa tänään valmistuneesta hellasta. Tämän hellan sponsorointiin käytettiin tukijäsenten jäsenmaksuja. Se rakennettiin Kiverengen alakouluun, johon myös vesitankki valmistui jonkin aikaa sitten. Rakentajia olivat Ndanu ja Iddy. Kiitos rakentajille ja tukijäsenille, jotka tekivät tämän lieden mahdolliseksi.
